10.08.08 Hellissandur – Stykkishólmur
by Garik and Lena
  • We woke up late this morning, Lena’s face was totally swollen, must be the sun from yesterday… I felt some skin peeling off my nose too. We ate breakfast in the hotel near the campsite, 900 ISK per person. It was ordinary food, bread, butter, cheese and sausages. The jewel in the crown was herring with mustard sauce… I’m kidding, it was disgusting!
  • When we came back to the tent, Lena changed her shoes to Crock’s since she couldn’t walk in anything else, after walking almost 30Km yesterday. We decided to hang around the town this day, so we walked about 3Km to the church of the town, there we noticed inside, a Hanukkah candlestick! Cool! We took pictures as usual and went back. A minor thought passed in our minds to go behind the church and seek the walking paths to the nature reserve (by the way the local people are not familiar with such paths, only the “lonely Planet” book is) but it passed very quickly! So we decided to go visit the Irish well we missed yesterday and whales’ skeleton. Well, we saw the well and the skeleton, we took a panoramic picture of the ice house. When we came back to the campsite our tent was the only one there. We sat down and talked about tomorrow plans, we made lunch (noodles).
  • We packed our stuff and headed to the bus station, the bus to Stykkisholmur was already there. We left our backpacks inside the bus, paid the driver 2000 ISK and bought mineral water, buns and sausages in the supermarket, near the bus station, for another 1000 ISK. We took a litle walk inside the town itself (not much to see) and walked back.
  • On our way to Stykkisholmur we took a picture of the Olafsviks’ church. Also we had to change buses in the middle of nowhere… The minivan to Stykkisholmur  waited for us in the pickup point. When we arrived to Stykkisholmur, we realized that the ‘Bonus’ store is closed, so is the info center. We paid 3500 ISK in the youth hostel for one night for two of us and went to eat a burger! ‘Lonely Planet’ book suggested some place, but it was to expensive for us, so we entered some other restaurant. There we ate for the first time in the trip, burgers with salad and french fries. We did had to pay for a small dish of ketchup but it was worth it! I’ve drank beer, Lena took coke but she did took a sip of my beer though! The whole dinner cost us about 3000 ISK. After that we were headed to the coast, to climb the hill and see the sunset. On the hill there was a lighthouse! So we took a picture of it too! After the sunset we went to see the local church, interesting structure I must say, but not before we bought ourselves breakfast for tomorrow morning, some sandwiches. Cost us about 800 ISK.
  • When we came back to the youth hostel, there were people sleeping already in our room. We felt a bit guilty coming back so late (around midnight) but this is a youth hostel, it’s us or them… I decided to take a quick shower tonight, Lena will have her in the morning. I stood in the shower for about half an hour, trying to regulate the temperature of the water. When I came back to the room, Lena was in the bed, even some guy with a headlight, who was awake when we came, now was asleep. I felt I’m going to sleep unorganized, my clothes everywhere!!! Seems like tent is not such a bad idea… though no lavatory and no shower built in…
