11.08.08 Stykkishólmur – Latrabjarg – Isafjordur
by Garik and Lena

  • New day in Iceland and Lena woke up earlier so she could go to the shower. I didn’t slept well because the mattress was awful and the bed was short… my back hurt… The room probably was heated during the night, Lena woke up with headache totally dehydrated. We packed our stuff very quickly and off we go… The streets were still empty when we walked to the ferry. We took our tickets that we’ve ordered from Israel in SeaTours office. It looked like most of the passengers came with their cars. Only we sat outside the office, eating breakfast, waiting for the ferry. The others put their cars on the ferry meanwhile. On board, the seats were wet, the wind was chilly and very strong, we thought about getting down to the toilets in order to get warm, only when the ferry was about to anchor in Brjánslækur. We passed the small island called Flatey, not much impressive, we didn’t got off the ferry, though some passengers did so.
  • Here we are in the West Fjords of Iceland, a place that most of the tourists bypass! The weather was cloudy and the feeling was, we see same people all the time! When we came to Brjánslækur, we didn’t know where to go and look for the bus to Latrabjarg. With us were two girls, looking for the same bus. Some guy from the ferry explained us which bus should we take, we put our backpacks in a towed wagon and headed to Latrabjarg, to see some puffins! It was actually a minibus with people in it coming I don’t know from where, but there was a group of four – five Israelis… even in Iceland, we still managed to come across another Israelis!
  • We thought that the price for Latrabjarg is expensive, 16000 ISK for two, but worth it! We were afraid that we won’t see puffins in this time of year, but there plenty of them for all the visitors, they were seating and hiding in the cliffs, not afraid of human being. We burst whole package of batteries taking pictures of these creatures! After hour or so, we headed back, on the way to Patreksfjordur we stopped in some youth hostel for free coffee/tea.
  • The Israelis bought the tickets around the island and added to their group another two individuals, one American guy I think and one Spanish girl, but I’m not sure. Their routes were similar, so they decided to get together. When we passed Brjánslækur to Isafjordur, our bus driver got a phone call, telling him to go back and pick some traveler that didn’t saw him… Well that’s not surprising, the minibus didn’t got into the seaport… We stopped near the Dinjandifoss to take few pictures, sweet!
  • Next thing we saw were the electrical power station, producing electricity from melted ice, we passed a tunnel that was made so people will be able to arrive Isafjordur in winter.
  • The camp site in Isafjordur was located just opposite the hotel in the center of the town, 3600 ISK for three nights for two persons. This is the only campsite in Iceland I think that we could actually take a shower in the hotel and use free Internet for 15 minutes!!! Late in the evening we took a walk to the town, bought some stuff, ate pizza…
